We wish you a Merry Christmas is an English Christmas carol that was compoased by Bristol-based composer Arthur Warrell. The song was published in 1935 by Oxford University Press under the name “A Merry Christmas: West Country traditional song”. In Warell’s arrangement, it will be seen that he used “I” instead of “We”. Many other traditional versions were recorded and derived by Warell’s original composition like George Dunn and Amy Ford.

The history of this carol is still unknown up to now. Although the greeting “a merry Christmas and a happy New Year” is first recorded during the early 18th century. There are also some probabilities that this started from wealthy people from the community that giving treats to carolers during Christmas eve.
