Flightless Bird, American Mouth is a song by Samuel “Sam” Ervin Beam who is called by his staged name Iron & Wine. The song was used in the popular vampire movie saga Twilight. It is in Twilight (2008) soundtrack and Twilight Saga : Breaking Dawn – Part 1 soundtrack which is in wedding version.
“Flightless Bird, American Mouth” could be about someone who tries to find a lost love. When he finds her, she has become a flightless bird, meant to fly high but grounded, fulfilling none of her youth dreams. Instead, she’s become another pill-wasted American housewife while he’s also a cliché of a fat couch potato watching passively as his life goes by – genius.com.

Diving too deep for coins
All of your straight light eyes
Wide on my plastic toys
I cut my long baby hair
Stole me a dog eared map
And called for you everywhere
Flightless bird, jealous, weeping
Or lost you?
American mouth
Big bill looming
Cursing my sore blunt tongue
Watching the warm poison rats
Curl through the wide fence cracks
Those fishing lures thrown in the cold and clean
Blood of Christ mountain stream
Flightless bird, brown hair bleeding
Or lost you?
American mouth
Big bill, stuck going down
